[EvE] n00bs In Space Episode 00 - Prologue

EVEI remember when I was 14, how engulfing were the 880kb of Amiga's port of ELiTE. Yes the megamighty Elite, which spawned many games with similar space galore theme in 15 years. Privateer, Starlancer, Freelancer, Homeworld, Dark Star One, whatever was the name, we all knew the style they brought. Space sims and space RTS. :D You remember Trade Wars on Buletin Board Systems? Good. EVE-Online makers remebered it too.

I was sucked into The World Of Warcraft for the first 6 months of its release. I waited for it for so long and even knew what I wanted to play when it finaly comes out from the Blizzard cook-house. I wanted to be the big refrigerator on the fiery horse. Yes, you guessed it right! I was Ork Warlock :D. So I played WoW. Went questing, instance dwelling, city raiding, PvP clashing.....And I finaly realised something which was partialy clear to me, but the article in a mag i forgot name, put the exclamation mark at the end of my out-of-the-boiled-brain fact. WOW was nothing more, and IS nothing more than highly polished, full mega-fry-your-video-card 3d version of Diablo. Nothing more, nothing less...
But, I was a lucky one to have very nice group of people playing with me. We also met some nice friends around the globe. Some of them even came to visit us in Belgrade, Serbia. So, sort to speak - it wasnt a waste of time. And also World Of Warcraft comes as a version of My Space social network when you look it from that angle. Most of the time inhabited by geeks, leet peeps, and Counter-Strike players cross-dressed on weekends in battlegrounds - But hey, I said I was lucky.

In that time I was introduced to EVE-Online. My friend got a test account so I went to yet another MMORPG - but in space. The big word about it was that the world constantly changed and that it was possible to influence it in a way that is more than changing the gear you are wearing and the color of your hair.

As someone said on gaming forums in Belgrade - What is this big black Windows Commander clone, dressed up like a game. But in the deeper layer I saw the beauty of Homeworld's universe an spacescapes. My friend logged in. He flied a little, he mined the asteroid a little, he docked to the station (nowhere nearly spectacular to when you dock in Elite for the first time). The game didnt hooked me. Like some others did. But it didnt left me uninterested. Part of it was because I am a big "universe" lover and like to read about it. Other part was that Blizzard firmly holded me in the claws of WoW. I was around level 50 and had yet to expirience some nice game features.

EVE waited patiently for her chance to hook me again. Occasional newsletters from the developer, pinned me from time to time, to read about the game improvements and story that was evolving.

In the meantime I stoped playing WoW. I must admit, I stoped playing everything. I mean everything. Occasional excursions into Civilisation III and IV, and into universe of MAME doesn't count.

I started working full time, producing music, designing some stuff for websited, barmen. Found a decent girl that I'll marry and I still dont play.

Couple of weeks ago, like an itch in the brain, I got the feeling I need to play something, something not too much time consumming, yet leaving me with the feeling of fullfilness (maybe too heavy word). I needed to play something in space, to fly away for a while, from time to time.

EVE came to mind.....

I phoned my friend who showed me EVE. I forgot his birthday. He listened to my excuse. He knows me. He laughs, because he knows me. We are in the simillar state of mind about games in this moment. We agreed we'll give EVE a chance.

And thus no matter that I am 31 years old - these are The Chronicles of NOOBS IN SPACE. The diary of our virgin brains plunged into the space of the second best MMORPG out there, which firmly holds its position against highly polished Diablo clone - World Of Warcraft.

To be continued in Episode 01 - Ignition.

Nintendo DS, Sony PSP Banned From Japanese Airplanes

Wi-Fi-enabled gaming consoles banned from flying

Handheld systems such as the Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation Portable are very commonly seen on Japan’s mass transit systems. You won’t be seeing those portable consoles on Japanese airlines, however. They have been banned for airplane use according to the Hollywood Reporter.

It is now against the law to use onboard aircraft any device that is capable of any wireless transmission, which includes the latest handheld gaming systems and cordless computer accessories such as wireless mice.

More Evidence Surfaces of 40GB PlayStation 3

UPC numbers and retail inventory documents point to 40GB PS3 incoming

According to Sony’s original estimates, stock of the 60GB PlayStation 3 should be nearly depleted from North American store shelves. With the $499 machine soon gone from retail, the effective cost to buy a PlayStation 3 would be the $599 charged for the 80GB model – that is, unless Sony changes its pricing model.

In addition to analysts expecting the price drop of the $599 model, stronger evidence of an even cheaper PS3 SKU with a 40GB hard drive is now surfacing from various sources. The UPC database lists product codes specifically for a “SONY PLAYSTATION 3 40GB.”

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 preview

FF TACTICS A2The original Final Fantasy Tactics on the PlayStation has proven to be more popular than perhaps anyone could have predicted. Though it's been almost 10 years since the original game was released in North America, the Tactics series is picking up more steam than ever. The sequel of sorts to the original, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, was released in 2003 in North America; a remake of the original game for the PSP was just released this week in Japan; and now, with Final Fantasy Tactics A2, the series is making its debut on the Nintendo DS. Gamespot had a chance to try the game out at the 2007 Square Enix Party in a stage setup that was utterly unique. Instead of a line of kiosks, the demo for A2 took place in a room constructed to look like a small schoolroom, complete with brick walls, a library of books on the back wall, and school desks and chairs.

Tactics A2 is the sequel to the Game Boy Advance's FF Tactics Advance, and though the game plays similarly to the original, the setting isn't exactly the same. In Tactics Advance, the characters began in the town of St. Ivalice, only to be transported to the magical realm of Ivalice (setting of other FF games such as Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings) after discovering a magical book. By contrast, A2 seems to start out immediately in Ivalice, where a small party is exploring a forest, only to run into a monstrous-looking Chocobo.

Square Enix earnings mixed, no FF XIII 'til '08?

Two weeks after its massive gamers day outside Tokyo, Square Enix has reported its earnings for its 2006 fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2007. The prior 12 months saw the company's revenue soar 31.3 percent year-on-year to 163.4 billion yen ($1.3 billion), its best-ever annual haul.

The AFX news service quoted Square Enix chief financial officer Yosuke Matsuda as saying, "Packaged game sales did well, in particular in North America and Europe, led by such titles as Final Fantasy XII."

"It will take a bit more time," Wada reportedly said about FFXIII. "At the very least, this fiscal year is definitely out of the question." When contacted by GameSpot, Square Enix USA reps claimed they were unaware of Wada's comments and were waiting on official word. "We'll get a translation to you as soon we receive one," was all a rep would say.

First Blu-ray Movie, Game Combo Disc

What Did You Say?Sony has long preached about the gaming benefits that the Blu-ray Disc drive is affording to the PlayStation 3. While we may not yet be seeing the direct advantages of the extra 40-plus gigabytes in gameplay, John Woo’s Stranglehold game offers PS3 owners an exclusive not found on the DVD version for Xbox 360 and PC.

In addition to the game, a collector’s edition of Stranglehold on PlayStation 3 will include a full-length, 1080p version of John Woo's critically acclaimed action film Hard Boiled on the same Blu-ray Disc. Stranglehold collector’s edition will retail for $69.95, $10 more than the regular edition, and marks the first movie and game hybrid disc for the Blu-ray format.

PS Home: William Gibson's Vision Realized

PS3I should preface by saying anyone who hasn't read William Gibson's Neuromancer should run, not walk, to the nearest bookstore and pick up a copy.

Neuromancer, the 1984 cyberpunk thriller, is one of my favorite books of all time. Over the years copious amounts of little details in Neuromancer have become everyday components of daily life today.

NeuromancerThe matrix (not capitalized) was Gibson's virtual reality in 1984. Hackers portalled around on "decks" -- personal consoles that were more like appliances than computers. Ultra-rich denizens of the supercities picked up cybernetic matrix implants as casually as executives today run out to an afternoon liposuction.

Growing up to see large portions of Gibson's fantasy come true had always intrigued me, but the latest announcements from Sony put me over the edge. Gibson often describes his cyberspace as if it's a real place; people mingle with each other, programs are objects you can pick up and use. I say his cyberspace because the term did not exist before 1982, when Gibson first used it in his novels. The equivalent of a website in Gibson's novels is always described as a physical place, yet surreal and manmade.

In Gibson's 1996 novel, Idoru, large portions of the book takes place in personal cyberspaces. A primary character, Chia, spends almost all of her time listening to music in her virtual room as an avatar. Sound familiar? It should, because it's exactly the roadmap Phil Harrison lined up for the PlayStation Home.

It's not to say Sony overnight duplicated what Gibson has been writing about for 25 years. Even many of Gibson's ideas are not unique, just evolutionary advances on older ideas. What makes me excited about Sony's announcement is that PlayStation Home will be the first ubiquitous virtual reality, if Sony can pull it off.

Now, I should give Second Life some credit here as well. If anything, Second Life is actually closer to Gibson's descriptions of the matrix -- yep, Gibson called it the matrix 15 years before The Matrix and a decade before Ghost in the Shell. The difference between Second Life and Playstation Home is that Sony wants the interaction between virtual and reality to be transparent, especially with media and the internet. Gibson anticipated this dozens of times over the last 25 years in his novels.

When Neuromancer was re-released in 2000, a quote from Jack Womack was added to the epilogue. "What if the act of writing it down, in fact, brought it about?"

Microsoft bans modded 360s

Console maker nixes Xbox Live access for systems that it determines have been altered "to try and maintain a fair gaming environment."

Earlier this month, Microsoft cracked down on Xbox 360 users bypassing regional lockouts on downloaded content. The system's Spring Update included updates that would prevent users from using dummy profiles to access Xbox Live Marketplace content intended for other regions. However, the update had no punitive measures for those who had done so in the past.

Now it appears the company is taking a stricter stance with respect to piracy and online cheating.

Q&A session details Starcraft II

STARCRAFT II

Blizzard Entertainment holds Western media press conference after announcing its highly anticipated sequel, covering key points about the game and its future.

According to the panel, the game is being developed by a team of approximately 40, though on the matter of the budget and the schedule, Morhaime simply said, "We don't really have a budget; we'll spend as much time and resources as we need to make this game great."

To address concerns from hardcore fans, Blizzard commented on questions specific to gameplay and the competitive community, such as the play speed of the demonstration videos, which didn't run as quickly as the original Starcraft. This is because, according to Pardo, the game played during the demonstration was set on a slower speed; Pardo suggested that Starcraft II will have multiple speed settings, similar to Warcraft III.

The panel also confirmed that the sequel will have only the three factions of the Protoss, Terrans, and Zerg; there will be no fourth faction. To address another question, the panel suggested that the resource management system in the sequel will feature "some enhancements, but it will still be very similar to the resource management in Starcraft, and just as important."
